vases + vessels

walking through our front door, a rustic terra cotta jug sits atop stacked home decor books. it is a piece from pottery barn, one that has been sold out for months within 100 miles of NYC. the short version of this story is: robb went on a work trip to Atlanta and i decided to check the stores there for the vase, and one had it in stock! so before i asked if he'd get it for me, i paid for curbside pickup and sent him the address... don't feel too bad for him, he's used to these shenanigans from me by now.
not only does it look lovely in our home, it holds a funny little story, just a bit longer than the version you just got.
as one walks through our entryway to the island, you'll set eyes upon carefully placed olive branches in a 19th century spanish water vessel paired with the most incredible smelling candle from Lumira.
and then of course, is my prized possession: an antique find, a four foot tall wabi sabi vessel made in the Ukraine in the 1940s in the corner of our hall.
my obsession with planters, indoor + outdoor, has gotten out of control, and i'm not mad at it.
i'm basically blaming quarantine. i've spent way too much time inside my home lately and managed to change every room over the past four months. although robb and i have minimalistic style preferences, sometimes our spaces get cluttered with 'stuff' and thus i took the time allotted, thanks to covid, to toss, donate, + sell what wasn't fitting the vibe. since then, i've only purchased large decor items (like planters + vases) that make a statement in the room.
the room i'm currently typing in has four vases and it's not even 60 sq. ft... they are my favorite item to shop for and to decorate with.
vessels and vases can be very expensive, and there are some on here in the higher price range, but we can all appreciate and love this rustic, edgy, RH home vibe in our space for a reasonable price.
i've found vases in antique stores, on facebook marketplace, craigslist, and ebay, as well as my favorite stores: home sense and home goods. the last photo here is from Nordstrom Rack, and do not skimp on outlets! our RH vessel was an outlet find.
if the shape and size are perfect and the item just needs a little paint job or DIY, then i'd get it. you can mix paint with little baking powder and paint it the item to the color of your liking, or use a chalk paint to get the same effect. there are tons of videos on youtube that show you how to create the worn look if thats what you prefer or turn an antique piece into something more modern and sleek. i'm always on checking online shops, estate sales, and budget friendly stores for home decor. i've gotten more than a few good steals from them!
