think less is more...

first take everything out, you'll need an empty space.

sorting items with intention.

start with one category such as denim. then go through each pair and ask yourself:

do these fit?do i love them? when was the last time i wore these?

would i buy them if i saw these in the store today?

the pieces you keep should be special to you, they should be items you can't live without.

continue to do this in categories like sweaters, blazers, cardigans, trousers, tee shirts, blouses etc.

the donation pile

get a big box, fold up the items you are not keeping and then choose where you'd like to donate them. options include goodwill, the princess project, or dress for success. if there are specialty items you'd like to sell then try a local consignment store.

the 'maybe' pile

there is always a 'maybe' pile no matter how hard we try to separate the yes' and the nos'. go through this pile at the end, whatever you still aren't ready to part with, place back in your wardrobe. there's no harm in keeping it for now.

the tailor pile

if you love a shirt or dress and it can be tailored, put it aside and bring it asap. many times we know we have to sew on a button or add a zipper etc. but then toss the item in the closet and forget about it. so create a iCal alert and make an appointment with your tailor to get everything fixed up.

organizing your space.

it will be clear what you will need to create a simpler and more 'user-friendly' storage system for yourself once everything is sorted. for instance, last season when i did a wardrobe clean out, i switched my plastic hangers to the felt ones which saved a lot of space. storage boxes / bins are useful for hats, scarves, and other accessories. if you need storage solutions, look into your options and create a closet that works best for what you have, and for your personal needs.

what will work for you and the closet space you currently have? this could mean more shelving, drawers, hanging space. maybe you realize you need a rolling rack or cubbies for your shoes... or maybe the set up is perfect as is, and just the system needs re-arranging.

designate areas in your closet for each wardrobe item. then you can sort by style, size, color, whatever system works best for you. personally, i sort by style then color going from light to dark.

what is missing?

this is where you analyze what your wardrobe is missing; whether it’s a cashmere sweater, perfect basic t-shirt, or a trusty pair of mules that will tie together any outfit. make a list of the essentials you feel might be missing.

make sure you only buy + keep what you love.

i love a trend as much as the next NYC girl but every trend is not for every one. a wardrobe should be made of of pieces that will last, that are 'you.' take your time to curate your uniform.
